12-YEAR-OLD BOY ARRESTED IN MULTIPLE ARSONS

A 12-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with two fires last week on Wing Street in Newark. On Thursday, July 21 crews were called to a garage fire at 60 Wing Street. On Friday, July 22 they battled a blaze at a home located at 56 Wing Street. No injuries were reported in either fire. According to a press release from Newark Police, the boy allegedly admitted to setting the fires. He was placed into juvenile detention and the case has been handed over to the Licking County Prosecutor's office.

TEEN CHARGED IN SHOOTING

A 16-year-old Lancaster boy faces adult charges in connection with a June shooting at an apartment complex in Newark. Jonathan Cochran faces two counts of attempted murder and one count of aggravated robbery for his alleged role in the incident in which Thomas McCarty, 42, and his son Shawn McCarty, 20, were shot at an apartment on the 600 block of Glenbrook Drive.

OHIO FLAGS OF HONOR

Lloyd Nice was one of many who participated in the Ohio Flags of Honor opening ceremony Friday night. The traveling memorial honors Ohio service men and women who have died in the global War on Terror. Nice placed a flag in the memorial for his son Joseph, a Marine, who died while serving in Iraq.

The memorial was on display thru Sunday at Cherry Valley Elementary school in Newark.

LCBDD LEVY

The Licking County Commissioners recently approved a measure to place a 1.5 mill levy on the November ballot that would support the Licking County Board of Developmental Disabilities. The levy would renew an existing one-mill levy and add a point five-mill increase. It will cost the owner of a $100,000 home an additional $17 or $18 per year. The current levy is set to expire at the end of 2017.

STAY COOL

It is going to be another hot and humid week in central Ohio. If you plan on being outside for any length of time, Newark Fire Captain Brandon Metzger says you need to be on the lookout for signs of heat related illnesses.

AGRICULTURE IS COOL

Congratulations to Newark’s Madilyn Johnson. The 8-year-old Johnson won the Agriculture is Cool visual arts contest in the third to fifth grade photography category. Winning photographs and drawings that illustrate why agriculture in Ohio is “cool” will be on display throughout the Ohio State Fair.
